Chapter 9: Why You Are Born Again
Now that you have been born again, it is essential to understand the purpose of your new birth. Many people lack a clear understanding of God’s intention for their lives. Some believe they are born again simply to receive a "new life" or to become better citizens. Others view it primarily as a mandate to witness for Christ or a "ticket" to go to heaven when they die.
While it is true that those who are born again will inherit heaven, that transition only occurs at the end of your earthly journey. In the meantime, you must fulfill your God-ordained destiny while you are still in this body. Before we explore the eight specific reasons why you are born again, let us first examine the meaning and significance of purpose.
The Law of Design
Everything that exists does so for a reason. Every product is designed, developed, and manufactured by its creator for a specific function.
A washing machine is engineered to clean clothes.
A dryer is designed to remove moisture.
An iron is built to remove wrinkles.
Only someone who misunderstands the nature of design would place dirty clothes on an iron and expect them to be washed. Similarly, a cutlass is designed to cut, a hoe to uproot, a radio to transmit sound, and a television to transmit images. The ability of any product to fulfill its purpose is built directly into its design. A manufacturer never expects a product to perform more or less than what it was designed to do.
In the same way, God built specific abilities into you to perform divine functions. However, your ability to perform at an optimum level depends on your connection to your origin.
The Principle of the Source
All things possess the same components and essence as the source from which they originated. A product’s potential is inherently tied to its source, and nothing can be greater than the material from which it was made. For instance, a wooden table is only as strong as the wood used to create it. Because humanity was originally created in the image of God, our true potential can only be realized when we are aligned with our Source.
The Law of Sustenance: Connecting to the Source
A second fundamental principle is that all things must be maintained by the source from which they originated.
When God created plants, He spoke to the ground (Genesis 1:11–12); therefore, soil sustains all plant life. Any plant severed from the soil dies.
When God created animals, He spoke to the earth (Genesis 1:24–25); thus, animals depend on the earth's resources for survival.
When God created fish, He spoke to the waters (Genesis 1:20–21); consequently, fish depend on water. Take a fish out of water, and it perishes.
When God created the stars, He spoke to the heavens (Genesis 1:14–15).
Throughout creation, the medium God spoke to became the source that sustains the creature. However, when God wanted to create you, He spoke to Himself (Genesis 1:26). Because you originated from God, you cannot fulfill your divine destiny without being connected to Him. This leads us to the first two reasons for your new birth:
Reason 1: To Become a Member of God’s Family
The primary purpose of being born again is to reconnect with your Source. You are not just a follower of a religion; you are a literal member of a divine household.
1 Peter 1:3:
“All honor to God, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for it is his boundless mercy that has given us the privilege of being born again, so that we are now members of God’s own family.” (TLB)
John 1:12–13:
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (NIV)
Ephesians 3:14–15:
“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name.” (NIV)
You do not have to wait for death to join this family. You are a member now. Your "Heaven" begins the moment you are born again; physical death is merely a continuation of that fellowship—a transition that, for the believer, is described simply as sleep.
Reason 2: To Grow into the Full Stature of Jesus Christ
Just as a human infant is expected to grow into the likeness of its parents, or an orange seed is designed to become a fruit-bearing tree, you are expected to mature into the likeness of Christ.
Romans 8:29:
“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” (NIV)
John 4:17:
“Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.” (NKJV)
Ephesians 4:11–13:
“So that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith... and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (NIV)
Growth is intended for this life. We know this because the roles of Apostles, Prophets, and Pastors exist to "prepare God’s people." These offices do not exist in Heaven—there are no evangelists winning souls in glory, nor pastors tending flocks there. The work of maturation happens here on earth. While the standard of becoming "like Jesus" seems impossibly high, it is attainable through total surrender to the Holy Spirit.
This continuation explores the remaining reasons for the new birth, focusing on the believer’s authority, inheritance, and active role in God’s global mission.
Reason 3: To Become God’s Ambassador on Earth
The true purpose of any creation can only be known by consulting the designer. When you ask God about your life, you discover that you are His personal representative on earth. In Genesis 1:26, God spoke of making man in His "likeness"—meaning a counterpart of the same class.
While the "first Adam" became a natural man ruled by sin after the Fall, Jesus lived as a supernatural man in a mortal body, fulfilling the original design. As a believer, the "seed" of Christ has replaced the "seed" of Adam's sin. When your spirit is in tune with God, you exhibit this supernatural ability to act in His stead.
1 Corinthians 6:17:
“But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.” (NIV)
2 Corinthians 5:20:
“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” (NIV)
Just as God made Moses "as God to Pharaoh" (Exodus 7:1), Jesus sends us with the same authority He received: "As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you" (John 20:21).
Reason 4: To Exercise Dominion and Rulership
You were born again to take dominion, to subdue, and to rule. In Genesis 1:26–28, God explicitly granted humanity ownership and mastery over the earth.
Dominion means to rule as a lord or master.
Subdue means to harness resources and bring them into alignment with God’s will.
This is not a license to destroy the environment, but a mandate to nurture and manage it. Furthermore, this rulership extends to the spiritual realm. Jesus stated:
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19, KJV
You have been given the authority to rule over sin, sickness, and the kingdom of darkness. As Revelation 5:10 declares, He has made us "kings and priests" to reign on the earth.
Reason 5: To Become an Heir of God and Joint-Heir with Christ
As a member of the family, you are a legal heir to the Kingdom. This inheritance is not just spiritual; it encompasses the entire universe.
Romans 8:16–17:
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” (NIV)
Jesus left a "will" at the Cross that includes peace, health, and provision. However, an inheritance is useless unless it is claimed. You might have millions willed to you, but you will remain functionally poor until you utilize those funds. God owns "the cattle on a thousand hills," yet He provides them for the benefit of His children. It is time to claim what is legally yours.
Reason 6: To Establish the Kingdom of God on Earth
God does not establish His Kingdom alone; He does so in partnership with born-again men and women. You are an active partner in a global "Kingdom Business." This requires the investment of your spiritual gifts, physical strength, material wealth, and time.
Deuteronomy 8:18:
“But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant...” (KJV)
Every believer has a unique contribution to make; there are no "redundant" members in the Body of Christ. As Romans 12:4–8 (TLB) explains, whether your gift is prophecy, service, teaching, administration, or giving, you must do it with excellence. The Kingdom is built when every part of the "team" performs its function.
Reason 7: To Engage in Spiritual Warfare
Every child of God is a member of God’s army. The moment you give your life to Christ, you are an automatic recruit. From that day forward, you become a candidate for spiritual warfare, whether you are aware of it or not.
To establish God’s Kingdom, we must first dismantle the kingdom of Satan. This is not a battle fought with physical weapons, but a spiritual wrestling match against organized darkness.
Ephesians 6:12:
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (KJV)
2 Corinthians 10:3–4:
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.” (KJV)
Matthew 11:12:
“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” (KJV)
Scripture describes you as God’s "battle-axe" and his "weapons of war" (Jeremiah 51:20). You have been commissioned to root out, pull down, and destroy the works of the devil so that you can plant and build the Kingdom of God (Jeremiah 1:10). You are called to do spiritual violence to Satan’s kingdom—conquering sin, quenching fiery darts, and claiming the nations for Jesus. You are on the winning side; embrace your training and take your position on the front lines.
Reason 8: To Live a Holy Life.
Paul teaches that holy living is necessary for successful spiritual warfare. Believers are called to a new life of purity and separation from the world. They are called “to be holy and blameless in his sight” (Ephesians 1:4), to “become a holy temple” (Ephesians 2:21), to “live a life worthy of the calling” they have received (Ephesians 4:1), and to “become mature” in Christ (Ephesians 4:13). They are also called to live “in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24), to “walk in the way of love” (Ephesians 5:2), to be made holy “by the washing with water through the word” (Ephesians 5:26), and to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
For what purpose? So that Christ may have a church “without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless” (Ephesians 5:27). Believers are also called to live holy lives in their relationships, including marriage, family, and work relationships (Ephesians 5:22–6:9). It is those who walk in holiness who are called to stand, fight, and win in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10–18).
Peter also adds his voice to the call to holy living. He says:
“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.”
1 Peter 2:9
He also writes:
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
1 Peter 1:15–16
In 1 Peter 3, Peter also calls believers to live holy lives in their relationships.
John also adds his voice, saying:
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life comes not from the Father but from the world.”
1 John 2:15–16, NIV
He further says:
“Since you know that Christ is righteous, you know that all who do right are God’s children.”
1 John 2:29, NCV
So, the eighth reason why you are born again is to live a holy life that is pleasing to the Lord.
Just as a manufacturer has a purpose for the product he makes, God also has a purpose for sending you into this world. We have identified eight of these purposes. The moment a person is born again, he or she becomes a member of God’s family. The Holy Spirit then begins His work, leading that person to grow progressively into the likeness of Christ.
As the believer grows, he or she begins to recognize the supernatural abilities God has placed within him or her. The believer can then take his or her position as an ambassador for Christ. He or she begins to act for God in this wicked and crooked world of injustice, selfishness, and oppression. As a result, the believer becomes part of God’s work of bringing freedom to men and women by carrying the message of life and hope to a world that has been under Satan’s bondage for so long.
To become an effective ambassador for Christ, the one who has submitted to the authority of Jesus Christ must now take his or her God-appointed position of rulership, both spiritually and physically. Together, believers can mobilize men and women, as well as the material resources God has placed at their disposal. In doing this, they take their place as sons and daughters of God and help establish the Kingdom of God on earth.
This Kingdom stands for everything Jesus stood for: peace, love, selflessness, freedom, justice, equality, and righteousness. But to achieve these godly purposes, we must put up a fight. They will not be attained on a silver platter. This means we must wage spiritual battles until this world of sin and decay is brought back under the rule and authority of God.
Every believer must, therefore, pursue the eight goals of the new birth. Do not wait idly for heaven. The believer’s experience of heaven begins here on earth. Get involved now in the Father’s Kingdom business.
Summary: The Path of the New Life
Just as a manufacturer has a specific purpose for a product, God has a purpose for sending you into this world. We have identified these eight purposes that form a progressive journey:
Membership: You are born into God’s family.
Maturity: The Holy Spirit leads you to grow into the likeness of Christ.
Representation: You realize your supernatural potential and act as God’s Ambassador.
Rulership: You take your God-appointed position of authority, spiritually and physically.
Inheritance: You mobilize resources, taking full advantage of your status as a joint-heir.
Establishment: You partner with other believers to establish God’s Kingdom—a kingdom of peace, love, justice, and equality.
Warfare: You wage spiritual battle to reclaim this world from decay and sin.
Godly Lifestyle: You live a holy life that is pleasing to God.
Do not wait idly for a distant heaven. Your life in the Kingdom begins now. Get involved in the Father’s business today.
